The project intends to mitigate threats, taking actions towards the conservation of the Andean tiger cat while monitoring its population status in two key protected areas; Mesenia-Paramillo Nature Reserve and Cuchilla del San Juan Integrated Management District. The species(camera trapping) and habitat(GIS image analysis) monitoring should involve several stages to cover the entire area, one phase per year, the first around the Cuchilla del San Juan and Mesenia-Paramillo posts. The conservation actions already in place includes a strong vaccination campaigns and the evaluation of domestic carnivores as zoonotic agents. These actions were chosen based on a previous environmental evaluation conducted in the areas with strong indication of a canine distemper outbreak two years ago. The local human perception towards felids will also be evaluated to enhance an education program already started about the conservation of the Andean tiger cat and the cloud forest. The data to be gathered on population changes/fluctuations will help us to protect the species in the area under an adaptative management approach following tangible conservation actions. Initial evaluations are suggestive of a population drop. Finally, a new generation of local wildlife conservationists will emerge through sounded training, as they are immediately needed in the Risaralda department.
