Community-based monitoring and conservation measures to protect the critically endangered Spider Monkey (Ateles fusciceps ssp rufiventris)

The main objective of the project is to implement a community-based monitoring plan to learn about the distribution, habitat use and conservation needs of the spider monkey population in the private conservation corridors located in the buffer zone of the Colorados Flora and Fauna Sanctuary, as well as take action with the local land-owners. For this purpose, the project will determine through a community-based monitoring initiative, the absence/presence of the species in the corridors associated to the Colorados Sanctuary and characterize the vegetable structure and composition of the species’ habitat where it is reported. The forest areas within private farms located in the corridors that connect the Colorados Sanctuary with the sites where the species is present will be protected through fencing and conservation agreements with land owners.
