Hidden in the Espinal? Conserving the most endangered small felid of central Argentina: the Pampas cat

Promote and implement locally the global #lentoporlafauna campaign to reduce the risk of roadkill by identifying hotspots of vehicle accidents involving Pampas cats, placing traffic signs and delivering stickers to drivers. Develop and implement poultry management programs that include the building or improvement of chicken pens –where needed- and other non-lethal methods to reduce retaliatory killing of Pampas cats and other carnivores in response to predation on domestic animals. Complete the design and implement a social marketing campaign specifically targeting local ranchers to promote local community knowledge, appropriation, and implementation of improved practices for the reduction of human-carnivore conflict. Engage local stakeholders in the co-construction of a database on small cat records, facilitate strategic communication and encourage the replication of key messages within the community to improve the human-wildlife relationship through the use of WhatsApp groups. Create awareness and pride among children of rural schools through a range of conservation education activities and a storybook featuring a Pampas cat as main character. Run a camera trap landscape-scale survey with the cooperation of rural producers to better understand the distribution and habitat of the Pampas cat and thus identify key areas for Pampas cat conservation in the southern Espinal.
