The proposed project aims at supporting two important objectives for the long term conservation of the tamaraw: 1) Establish information on the island wide habitat distribution and estimated populations of tamaraw in Mindoro 2) Develop monitoring methodologies to estimate population abundance and trends suitable to a range of habitat types. These two targets are part of the Meta Population Management sub-program, as formulated in the Tamaraw Conservation and Management Action Plan (TCMAP 2021-2030), aiming at monitoring and managing the different tamaraw sub-populations scattered in Mindoro as one. It follows the discovery of this new tamaraw subpopulation in the upper Amnay Watershed region in 2018 and the need to conduct a better assessment of the entire inner Mindoro range; the pandemic creating delays in the overall process. The project aims at assisting our long term local government partner from the Tamaraw Conservation Program in this mission by providing technical and scientific expertise and support in conducting the fieldwork and elaborating the outputs.
