Developing an optimal monitoring program for the Endangered Togean babirusa through the support of citizen scientists
This is the first ecological study of the Togean Islands babirusa. This project aims to: 1) Map the distribution of Babyrousa togeanensis. I will conduct a camera-trapping survey across the entire distribution range of this species. Using occupancy modeling, I will generate a species distribution map to identify its core habitat on the islands; 2) Develop a monitoring protocol for the species. I will develop a statistically robust monitoring protocol to assess trends in the occupancy of this species over time; 3) Train national park wardens and local citizen scientists to conduct the monitoring. I will conduct three-day training workshops to teach park wardens and citizen scientists how to apply the monitoring protocol. At the end of the workshops, the participants will receive a monitoring kit including camera traps and a GPS unit to continue the monitoring program which I will supervise remotely.
