Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation (Project No. 11252584) - Radiated tortoise - Awarded $5,000 on July 17, 2011
17-07-2011 - Radiated tortoise

Surveys in southern Madagascar for Critically Endangered Radiated Tortoises (Astrochelys radiata). We estimate a total of 55 tortoises over 5.19 km2, with a 1.83:1 males-to-female ratio. We emphasise the need for additional tortoise studies, particularly in the unstudied area of Conservation Zone of Ifotaka-North Protected Area, and review tortoise conservation efforts in southern Madagascar

Two species of lizards Phrynocephalus horvathi and Eremias pleskei listed in IUCN Red List as Critically Endangered and one species of tortoises Testuo graeca listed as Vulnerable inhabit ecosystems of the semi-deserts of Ararat Valley which most threatened due to restricted territory and overpopulation. This project is aimed at getting the first-hand knowledge on distribution and abundance these reptiles.

Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation (Project No. 11052044) - Red-crowned roofed turtle - Awarded $2,000 on June 27, 2011
27-06-2011 - Red-crowned roofed turtle

Turtles are one of the least studied species in Nepal regarding their ecology, habitat, distribution and threats. The conservation of such species largely depends on their occurrence within protected areas or on the importance given at national level. This project aims to assess the status and threats facing Critically Endangered Red-crowned Roofed turtle in an area which connects two protected areas across Nepal and India.

Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation (Project No. 10251593) - Lauan Ground Skink - Awarded $7,000 on June 27, 2011
27-06-2011 - Lauan Ground Skink

Nothing has been learned about the Ono-I-Lau Skink (Leiolopisma alazon)since its discovery in 1982. It was known from one very small islet in a very distant part of Fiji. Whether the species is extinct is not even known. This project will determine the current status of this species and determine conservation priorities for the species if found to still exist in the wild.

Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation (Project No. 1025955) - Giant South American turtle - Awarded $10,000 on December 09, 2010
09-12-2010 - Giant South American turtle

This project aims to contribute to conservation of three endangered species of Amazon River turtles. We seek to achieve this goal by: generating appropriation for conservation and building capacity of local conservation groups in indigenous communities of Colombia and Peru; direct conservation actions by the local conservation groups with support of environmental authorities from both countries; and awareness-raising among participating and ...

Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation (Project No. 1025921) - Geoffroy's sideneck turtle - Awarded $20,000 on December 09, 2010
09-12-2010 - Geoffroy's sideneck turtle

The conservation status of the 3 three described species of the Phrynops geoffroanus group and the 10 or more undescribed species in this complex are not known. Because of the delicate nature of freshwater turtles some of these species may be facing extinction now before they have even been identified. We are conducting molecular studies to define these new species.

Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation (Project No. 10251178) - Jamaican iguana - Awarded $25,000 on November 03, 2010
03-11-2010 - Jamaican iguana

The Jamaican iguana was feared extinct until a remnant population was discovered in 1990. Since that time the Jamaican Iguana Recovery Group has actively pursued a conservation programme geared toward averting short-term extinction and ensuring the long-term persistence of the species. Focused conservation efforts such as our headstart-release and predator control programmes have resulted in a 3-fold increase in the number of nesting female ...

Lygodactylus williamsi is an endemic species of gecko found in Kimboza Forest in Tanzania. The species is not in the government quota but is widely traded in the European and American pet markets. The Wildlife Division and law enforcers such as police and customs do not know the species thus TRAFFIC with support from MBZSCF conducted species identification to help them cover this knowledge gap.
