Seeking for the ghosts: the use of thermal sensing in surveys of the buffy-tufted-ear marmoset
The project aims at testing the effectiveness of thermal handheld cameras in locating and counting family group individuals of buffy-tufted-ear marmosets in the field, many of which are usually hidden from view, in comparison to, or complementing, traditional sampling modes, so as to improve future censuses, surveys and monitoring, essential information required for the integrated conservation planning that is been implemented by the Mountain Marmosets Conservation Program - MMCP.
We are in the middle of the data collection phase, and the camera is already proving itself to be quite useful, increasing both the speed with which animals are counted, as well as eliminating doubts regarding the number of animals per group.
Given the high accuracy of the camera, it has the potential to be used in many projects after completion of the current one.
