Enhancing Conservation Efforts through Occupancy, Health Monitoring, Threat Assessment of Wild Felids in Bhutan: Capacity Building and Advanced Survey Techniques

Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation (Project No. 242535378) - Clouded Leopard - Awarded $8,500 on December 06, 2024

1. Quantify the Presence of Domestic Dogs and Wild Felids: This study aims to measure the presence of free-ranging domestic dogs and various wild cat species, including the common leopard, Asiatic golden cat, tiger, marbled cat, clouded leopard, snow leopard, and leopard cat, within protected areas. Since knowledge about some of Bhutan's wild cat species, such as the marbled cat, is limited, we will gather baseline data on their presence in relation to human and dog activity.

2. Monitor Wild Felid Population Health: We will monitor the health of wild felid populations, focusing on the impact of free-ranging domestic dogs, human activities, and tourist presence within protected areas. This will involve assessing the ecological and health-related interactions between wild felids and their environment.

3.Engage and Educate Stakeholders: The project will engage government partners, local communities, and international visitors to raise awareness about wild felids. It will highlight how certain behaviours, such as feeding free-roaming dogs, can impact wildlife. Findings will be regularly shared with local government agencies and partner organizations to inform and improve conservation strategies.

Project Implementation: Department of Forests and Park Services, Bhutan in collaboration with Felidae Conservation Fund. US
