Research and Conservation Action of Javan Endemic Damselfly Drepanosticta sundana in Menoreh Hill

Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation (Project No. 240535531) - Double banded forest damselfly - Awarded $5,000 on January 20, 2025

Drepanosticta sundana is an endemic species of Java Island. The status categorized as Data Deficient (DD) by the IUCN, indicating insufficient information about its distribution and population, so its extinction status and risk of extinction are not yet clear. As an endemic species in Java, more extensive exploration is still needed in the mountainous areas of Java Island to ensure the data on the population and distribution of the species. D. sundana is often found in places wherewater flows such as small rivers and creeks. These places are in or on the outskirts of the forest. Where the surroundings are covered withdense and cool trees with humid air and low light intensity. They likewater seepage areas and clean, rocky waterways with strong currents. As an endemic and sensitive species to waterquality change, the development of tourism, insecticide contamination from agroforestry activities, and climate change in Menoreh Hill will threaten their habitat. So, the aim of this project is to gain the species information of Drepanosticta sundana. Following are objectives in details: (1) Understand the population estimates, habitat characteristics, and behavior of Drepanosticta sundana. (2) Increase the survival rate of Drepanosticta sundana. (3) Increase the capacity of local communities and stakeholder to conserve D. sundana.
