Golden Mantella (Mantella aurantiaca)
Mohamed bin Zayed Species project number 12254474
A plant survey was carried out at 11 golden mantella breeding ponds in Mangabe forest and their adjacent forests from September to November 2012 by the Madagascar team of Missouri Botanical Garden. In total, 862 plant species were recorded from Mangabe forest, of which 104 were found in the mantella breeding ponds. Three Endangered plant species are found in the mantella breeding ponds: Bulbophyllum auriflorum, Pandanus spinifer and Phyllanthus moramangicus. In the forest, 23 other Endangered species were recorded. The Critically Endangered tree Aspidostemum capuronii was recorded to exist around Mangabe forest in the literature but was not observed during this survey. This project highlights that efforts to conserve the golden mantella frog will also benefit other endemic and threatened Malagasy biodiversity.
