Project Overview
The Grevy's Zebra Trust was established in January 2007. Our mission is to conserve Grevy's zebra, an endangered species, across its range in collaboration with local communities. Located in Kenya, with extension to Ethiopia, we recognise the critical role played by pastoral people whose livelihoods are inextricably linked to the same landscape.

The Grevy's Zebra Trust employs community ambassadors who help protect the Grevy's zebra. This project will provide funding to pay the ambassadors to protect the zebra and employ a radio operator to facilitate communication between ambassadors.

Project Outcomes
The Grevy's Zebra Ambassador Program has been able to streamline and enhance its activities thanks to the solid foundations that have been provided by partner funding. In the last twelve months the program has focused on the following areas: building the capacity of the Ambassadors in Grevy's zebra monitoring; increasing patrol effectiveness through deployment of joint Ambassador teams during times when wildlife is most vulnerable to illegal killing; Ambassador morale has been boosted by support to their activities from the Regional Coordinator, and formal recognition by the Kenya Wildlife Service of their role in conservation; community and local partner liaison is more frequent with increased exchange of information and collaboration; and results from monitoring have translated into local conservation action including dry season water management and reporting of poaching incidents. Grevy's zebra conservation in El Barta still faces considerable challenges from on-going insecurity but with a stronger network of partners now in place, GZT is looking forward to making significant progress in peace-building over the coming years to foster a more enabling environment for conservation and community development.
