Ecology and conservation of Willemses' Stone Grasshopper (EN) in Greece
The project aims at increasing our scientific knowledge on the conservation status of Willemses' Stone Grasshopper endemic populations, supporting its conservation in practice. It sets four objectives: [1] Increase ecological knowledge base. We will organize sampling spatially, by mapping (GIS) the potential habitats of species using satellite imagery (April) we will perform fieldwork in spring 2022 (May-June): (a) visiting known and potential new localities of its presence, (b) assessing its population size, (c) evaluating its habitat quality and threats. [2] Update conservation status assessment. We will analyze data to update and enrich with new information its distribution, population, habitat, threats and conservation status under IUCN criteria. [3] Conservation guideline. Data analysis will conclude with a short report on the species' status, threats, and suggested conservation measures for its recovery. [4] Result dissemination. Our research findings will be communicated to the Natural Environment & Climate Change Agency (NECCA), responsible for biodiversity conservation and management of all protected areas of the country, as well as to the local management units of NECCA in Epirus. Result dissemination also includes public awareness through media and social media and BCL website, a diploma thesis, and a scientific publication in the future.
