Overcoming financial constraints from COVID to rebuild unique clouds forest ecosystems of southwestern Ecuador

Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation (Project No. 212526571) - El Oro Parakeet - Awarded $15,000 on May 06, 2021

At Buenaventura Reserve and surrounding environs, Jocotoco is increasing forest cover to ensure landscape connectivity amongst fragmented forest patches to provide contiguous, high-quality habitat for the Ecuadorian Tapaculo and El Oro Parakeet. In 2020 and the beginning of 2021 we planted 40,000 native trees. To reduce mortality rates, we need to maintain our reforestation team on the ground so that they can clear competing invasive grasses and allow our planted trees to have the highest survival rate possible; Fundación Jocotoco believes in executing our reforestation activities without the use of chemicals to combat the weeds. This is the cleanest measure and one that ensures the high survival rate of all our reforestation plots (well above 85%). Thus, our project objectives are: *Create & maintain extant forest cover for threatened species dispersal. *Maintain a low mortality rate throughout our restoration plots at Buenaventura.
