Drosera magnifica (Droseraceae) – a flagship species for the conservation of an unexplored mountain complex

Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation (Project No. 212527281) - Magnificent sundew - Awarded $5,000 on November 05, 2021

 

The objectives of this project are:

 

- to monitor the population of Drosera magnifica, especially the individuals affected by the 2020 fire;

 

- to map and prepare a diagnostic of the areas of campos rupestres of the João Pinto Geological Formation, indicating priority areas for conservation;

 

- to conclude the inventory of the biodiversity of Serra do Padre Ângelo, identifying new and threatened species in the area;

 

- to gather information about distribution, population size, and threats affecting the 20 recently described species of the region and also the potentially new species;

 

- to assess the conservation status of these species together with the National Center for the Conservation of the Flora (CNCFlora), so that these species can be included in the National Red List;

- promote and socialize the knowledge generated by this project with the local community and authorities per social media videos, lectures, and workshops, engaging them in the conservation of the area.
