Mohamed bin Zayed Species project number 222530411
Conservation Status, Distribution and Awareness of the Mt Kenya Bush Viper, Kenya.

Atheris desaixi is an endemic species to Kenya and having been only recorded in three localities, Chuka, Ngaya and Nyambene hills forests at an altitude of about 1300-1700m. Its always found camouflaged in bushes 2-4m above the ground. It gives birth to about 6 live young ones. Its population keeps on declining due to habitat destruction and illegal collection for the pet trade. Its currently categorized as Endangered in the IUCN Red List.
In our project we aim to:-
Assess the population size and population status of the target species.
Map the geographical distribution of the target species to show the extend in which its distributed.
Assess the threats faced by the species in their natural habitat including the extend of illegal collection for pet trade.
Create public awareness on the target species to the local communities.
Provide updated baseline information about the species.
Also will come up with conservation action plan to help in conserving the species by involving all the key stakeholders.
