Establishment of community-based livestock breeding center to sustain the livestock seedbank project at Bire Kpatuos Game Reserve, South Sudan
The main objective of this grant is to establish a community-based livestock breeding center that will help sustainably expand the reach of the current livestock seedbank project to more beneficiaries awaiting in the Bire Kpatuos communities. Viable alternative sources of protein and income within these communities will further reduce the pressure of poaching which ultimately enhances the conservation of AGC and other species within the habitat. This grant intended to support local communities build predator proof fencing for the current 48 beneficiary households on a 50% cost sharing basis where each household would provide local materials for the fence. However, internal displacement from armed conflict dirupted this plan and led to temporary closure of the operationalized livetsock breeding center. The project also planned to consolidate the continuing community mobilization activities with the management of the community-based livestock farm in addition to creating employment to community members.
