Latin America Workshop: Promoting conservation of the Latin American Funga through specialists' capacitation and extinction risk assessment of threatened fungi

Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation (Project No. 232531493) - Lamelloporus americanus - Awarded $13,000 on June 15, 2023

The III Latin American workshop on assessing fungal (and lichens) species for the IUCN Global Red List will be organized by the MIND.Funga team in collaboration with other specialist partner groups that already develop relevant fungal conservation in Latin America (LA), such as FFungi, BrazFunSG, CFSG, Grupo de Conservación de hongos de Latino america y el Caribe, and Asociación Latinoamericana de Micología (ALM). The workshop will be focused on training mycologists from LA countries in the assessment of fungi under IUCN criteria. This possibility is linked with ALM which will celebrate a congress next August giving the opportunity to develop this training to all the mycologists present. The requested funds will support logistic and workshop development costs for mycologist and organization team. A series of species are expected to be proposed for GFRL following the congress. In this case, it will be necessary to give support to the mycologist to make this process swift and reliable. The conference is an excellent opportunity to bring together mycologists from the entire region, who are experts in different taxonomic groups of fungi, including groups with few species in red lists. This workshop will help strengthen the group of LA specialists, encourage assessments, and learn from the experiences of different colleagues.
